Let’s make a zine
While learning traditional black and white film photography and darkroom skills, my students used their new found powers to tell a story.

Besides teaching photography, I take on the role of project manager. I wanted photography to be a medium to harness young people’s organizational skills. It was an opportunity to practice how to plan, collaborate, understand a new technology and process, be realistic about story, scope and scale. Leaving the class knowing they were able to make something from nothing, I hope, this memory gives them the confidence to just get things done and deliver in projects outside of just photography.
It’s not just the photography, but the planning.
The team decided on a Harry Potter-like magic theme. They could be students from some school other than Hogwarts where they are trying out new spells.

Getting it done.
The Mellon Park Fairies
a younger class of students made a zine about the mysterious ‘3 Season Fairies’ of Pittsburgh’s Mellon Park

Story
I love sequential arts and visual communication. They tend to be multidisciplinary. The visuals and the writing catalyze each other.
